Sweet Home Chicago

I'm officially a Chicago resident again and am finally starting to feel a little more settled! It's amazing how long it takes for an organizer to become organized! Ahhhh....

Since some of you have been asking, I wanted to share some of my new home's favorite ORGANIZED spaces::

1. Now that I have more space, my mom brought my silver that was a gift from our wedding. Ummmm...that was 4 years ago! I just LOVE it and am so excited to use it! Looks like Thanksgiving 2012 is at the Murphy's!

2. I thought my everyday silverware turned out pretty NEAT as well! Simple is always a good thing.

3. Awwww....my shoes! As many of our clients know we are obsessed with these clear shoe boxes. They are great because you can see all of your shoes (facing the same direction of course)! Makes me excited to add to my collection!

4. Here's my cute little makeup drawer. I'm not a huge makeup person, so this small amount of space works just fine for me. I used these drawer organizers from the Container Store!

5. I just had to share my new favorite room! It's a little breakfast nook. So cute, right? Still need to get a couple of chairs, but can't wait to have my morning coffee out here!

6. And last...my new favorite purchase! Thanks to The Painted Lady! I'm obsessed with my new table. Again, having a chair dilema though. Any ideas??

Hope you enjoyed my tour! Please tell all your friends that NEAT is in Chicago full time now and we are ready to get the whole city organized!

Travel Essentials - How to Successfully Travel This Holiday Season

Traveling during the holidays can be an absolute disaster if you are not properly organized for a trip. Nina Garcia once tweeted that the key to good packing was to start a day or two early.  Although we totally agree with this statement, there are a few more things that you can do to ensure stress free traveling.  First, take a page out of Brad John's book.  This co-founder of Flight 001 makes packing for two weeks look simple with this "how to" video.

Since we both feel that we are experts in organizing for travel as well, we wanted to share with you our number #1 travel tips... consider it an early Christmas gift!  Ashley cannot live without 3floz.com when she travels.  Daily beauty regiments should not be discontinued while traveling. This amazing site lets you choose tons of luxury beauty products in... you guessed it... 3 fluid ounces.  It is simply a dream come true!

Molly cannot travel without her wireless card.  Nothing is a day ruiner quite like no internet on the plane, in your hotel or at your favorite coffee shop.  Wifi cards are a small item to pack that can make a big difference while traveling.  There are many options to choose from so it is best to go with a provider that is reliable... we will leave that decision up to you... :)

We would love to hear your packing tips too - let us in on your best kept secrets!

Safe travels!

Emmy Award Winning Show Asks for NEAT's Help

Last week, Modern Family, the Emmy award winning show practically begged for NEAT's help... well at least that is the way that we took it as we watched the episode.  If for some reason you do not like the show modern family, just stop reading this right now - you should be ashamed of yourself!  In this particular episode, Cam and Mitchell had an upcoming visit from the Adoption Services representative.  Mitchell finds out about the meeting when he picks up the latest Glamour Magazine and sees that Cam has scribbled a note across Katie Holmes' hair about the time the representative is coming.  Cam of course has a hard time deciphering what time the representative is coming and Mitchell tells him he needs a new method for keeping important dates and times.  Of course Cam disagrees and swears by his method only to have the Adoption Services representative show up at their door and the two are completely unprepared.

This hilarious episode is actually the story of something that we see every day.  Our clients are busy; their hands are full and they write down information on any flat surface that ink can be removed from.  If you can relate to Cam, Mitchell, or any of our clients, here are some great places to keep important dates:

Planner, Organized, NEAT Method

This adorable date book from Paper Source has plenty of room to write it all your daily information AND comes with Stickers to place on your calendar to document very important dates.

Kate Spade, Day planner, NEAT Method

This Kate Spade wall calendar adds a bit of style to your home but is perfect for a busy family.  When the calendar is hung in an appropriate place, the whole family can be aware of the events for the day.

Graphic Image, Daily Planner, Organized, NEAT Method

Every man has the right to a date book too!  We love Graphic Image's pocket sized leather journal.  This makes it easy for the on-the-go man to make it to the right place at the right time.

And finally, for those of us who are totally into digital, Google calendar allows you to create a calendar online that can also be synced to your phone.  The calendar can be color coded for family, friends, work events AND can be shared with others!  AMAZING!

Hopefully one of these options is the perfect choice for you!

A Candy Store Approved by NEAT

Miette, San Francisco, NEAT Method, Pink, Candy

Lately, the NEAT team has been stopping by Miette in Hayes Valley more frequently than usual.  When we asked ourselves what was drawing us in to this adorable candy shop, two answers immediately popped into our heads.  Number one:  We. LOVE. Candy.  Seriously we are not sure if we were a match made in heaven or hell because we can easily influence each other to grab a sweet treat in between jobs and meetings all of the time.  Reason number two: it is so stinking organized!

Although we could probably write an entire post on our favorite candies and why, we figured the second reason was a little more appropriate J  If you have not had the chance to walk into Miette, it is the most whimsical candy store you have ever been to.  As soon as you step foot in the place, you are magically ten again begging to try everything.  We are constantly drawn into the shop because of their beautiful displays of candy.  The way that the candy is all arranged in large class jars and color coded is an organizers dream come true!  Miette not only has an amazing presentation but their organization gives the space a sense of cleanliness that is unbeatable.

Bottom line, we love you Miette!

Barney's or Forever 21?

Have you ever wondered what sets a store apart that looks like this, compared to….

Barney's New York, Organized, Shopping, NEAT Method

This??

Forever 21, unorganized, shopping, clothes, NEAT Method

Besides the absolute obvious, which is that the clothes from Barney’s New York are going to cost you significantly more than Forever 21, as organizers we see this scene completely different.

Lets be honest, Forever 21 is great to find that trendy piece that you have been dying to try, but as total type A’s, we can barely walk in the store without having a nervous breakdown.  That led us to wonder, why does a store like Barney’s always look so much better than a store like Forever 21?  There are probably many valid reasons that could be concluded, but, as organizers we like to think that we have the best answer.

Barney’s has made the choice to set a precedent in their store: sleek, stylish and ORGANIZED.  When you walk into Barney’s, you pick up a shirt that is folded and then do your very best to fold it EXACTLY the way you found it.  This happens without fail whether you are typically an organized person or not.  This is because you do not want to ruin how beautiful the store looks.

But what about Forever 21?  Have you honestly ever seen someone pick something up there and fold it nicely??  No.  You haven’t.  People pick things up, carry it with them, decide they don’t want it, and discard it at the nearest table, rack, or (our worst nightmare) the floor!

As organizers, we see every type of closet there is: walk-ins, reach-ins, shared, etc.  Before we begin, many of our clients have closets that look like….how shall we put this… like Forever 21.  One of the biggest concerns that we hear time and time again is, “So now you are going to make it look nice but let’s be serious, I will never be able to keep it this way.”  Well, here is your answer:

Being organized will turn you from Forever 21 to Barney’s! You will love to shop your own closet so much that when you take something out you will actually want to fold it and put it back where it belongs and not on the floor.  Why?  Because you wouldn’t dare throw a Barney’s garment on the floor would you?? Take a look at your closet right now – are you more Forever 21 or Barney’s?  If you are NEAT you will have a shopable closet that makes you want to stay organized.  If you are more of a Forever 21, save yourself the money of buying new clothes because you can’t find the ones you own and get NEAT!

To: You ... Love: NEAT

As you know, a few weeks back we were OBSESSED with Martha’s stickers for food and think that every NEAT reader should have them.  Not only can you use them in your refrigerator for produce but you can also put them on frozen goods in the freezer.  We constantly tell our clients that not keeping track of dated foods/spices is making you SEEM like a bad cook.  Today we are giving you a the gift of organization and the opportunity to stay on top of your cooking skills.

When you click the link below, you will find your own personal stickers to put on your produce and frozen goods made by yours truly.  Once you have the document, purchase and print these stickers out on the Avery 5264 labels.  We hope you enjoy our replica of Martha’s fabulous idea!

Have a fabulous weekend!
